Affiliate Cookie Systemaffiliate marketingHow Should the Affiliate Cookie System Work?When a prospective customer arrives at our web site from a valid affilate link, we send a cookie to the customer's browser with a built-in lifetime of 90 days. If the same browser is used to click on a different valid affiliate link to us, it will replace the previous cookie with a cookie for the latest affiliate, again for 90 days, unless if it happens during the 10-day lock-in period, the prior affiliate cookie is safe. With most organization's affiliate programs that I've investigated, the latest affiliate to bring the customer is the one who gets the commission. That's the way it should be, I suppose, because the latest affiliate is the one who brought the person that made the sale. However, that can result in unfairness. Therefore, the lock-in concept was developed. It prevents a subsequent affiliate from overwriting the previous affiliate's cookie during the lock-in period. It can greatly reduce comission stealing. If you're an affiliate with organizations that allow cookie overwrite/replacement, consider how easy it is for someone to click on your affiliate link and realize they're also an affiliate of the same organization, and then immediately go back and click on their own affiliate link. They get a "discount." You get butkus. That can't be done with our affiliate program. The lock-in period is designed to keep your commission safe from thieves like that. Yet, the lock-in period is short enough so other affiliates are not permanently locked out. Affiliates who later bring customers back, resulting in sales, are the affiliates who should get the money. If you bring a prospective customer back that already has your cookie, the 90-day cookie and the 10-day lock-in periods are replenished and start anew. Copyright 2007 Bontrager Connection, LLC
